Meet Kathryn DeFatta

The Basics

Where are you from?

Franklin, TN

Do you believe a cup is half empty or half full?

Half full! Although I would rather have it overflowing.

Do you have any pets?

No, sadly, I am not so great at caring for plants and animals. However, my best friends bought me a pet rock. . . It is pretty fitting 🙂

What was your first job?

I worked at Limited Too in high school. . . lots of glitter!

What is your most treasured possession?

My running shoes, water bottle, and my Bible.

How do you spend your spare time?

Spare time?! Just kidding. Sometimes I like just being alone and refueling with myself, some coffee, and my Bible. However, I love spending time with friends and connecting with good people, laughing, cooking, and loving on each other!

What adjective would a close friend use to describe you?

What do you do for fun?

I love making jewelry. It is one of those creative outlets that let’s me stop focussing on the world and things ruminating in my head and just be in a space and disconnect.

What is the last book you read?

Rising Strong by Brene Brown

Are you a morning person or a night person?

Questions about your therapy practice

What do you value about being a therapist?

The opportunity I get everyday to sit and hold space with people as they wrestle some of life’s most difficult situations. It is pretty cool be trusted enough for others to be authentically vulnerable, show imperfections, and be okay.

What do you think is important for a client to look for in a therapist?

Connection and the humility of knowing our limitations. I am not perfect—because I’m human. Knowing we don’t know it all is pretty important. Not every therapist is for every human seeking a therapist.

How does your faith play itself out in your work as a therapist?

My faith is my personal guide and my rock. However, as a therapist, my spiritual path gets to be different from my clients’. Having some kind of spiritual foundation is necessary for long term growth and commitment which is something I have learned through my own road to healing and recovery.

What is the one thing about yourself that you would like people to know?

I am a firm believer in the power of counseling and leaning on others to help mend inner core wounds. I have done a large amount of personal work that has created space within myself and truly believe that our work is never complete but things do get better.

What is your favorite music and your favorite singer/band?

NEEDTOBREATHE is my all time favorite!! I could listen to them all day everyday.

What is your favorite month of the year and why?

I love December—mostly because it is my birthday month. I also love getting to the end of a year and getting to reflect on all the things that have happened while preparing new goals and visions. Plus Christmas 🙂 And I love the winter (especially TN winter)

What is your favorite genre of movies?

Rom Coms! I will not watch scary movies—there is something weird to be about forcing yourself to be scared. I would rather laugh.

What is your favorite movie?

I can’t pick just one so I will go with Where the Heart is (classic), Step Brothers, and The Break Up.

Which TV show is your favorite?

Gilmore Girls

What is your favorite sporting activity?

I love, love, love to run. I grew up playing soccer so I still like watching and playing from time to time. I am not a huge sports fan though. . . I am working on it 🙂
